The New Jersey Devils have dipped into the NHL trade market. As one of the best teams in the league this season, many are pointing to the Devils to activate the market and make their first significant move. They have as many available prospects and options as any team to make a move. They are willing to give up former first round picks in trades.
Right now, the main target seems to be Timo Meyer. The San Jose Sharks wing really makes a lot of sense for the Devils. He’s a restricted free agent at the end of the season, so he’s not a true rental. Renters reportedly want to avoid Tom Fitzgerald. Alexander Holtz seems like the logical choice as a returner, as Meyer seems to be the target.
Holtz struggled in Lindy Ruff’s system this season. It’s not for lack of trying. He worked with a skills coach during the season. He is constantly proactive and tries to work with every linemate.
Despite his struggles this season, Holtz clearly has plenty of talent. His shot is unbelievable. There are times when he knows exactly where to go to take a shot. Because of his struggle, his value cannot be where, and the devil is racing against time to make a decision against him.
The Sharks are looking for Holtz because they have William Eklund, who has built chemistry with Holtz since they played for the Swedish national team. Trading Meyer for Holtz and a few other core pieces would give the Sharks two core pieces to build around.
Acquiring a player like Meyer would be huge for the Devils, but would they regret signing a player like Holtz? The plan coming into the season looks to have Holtz as a key part of the offense. Is it really wise to abandon that plan after one season, especially since he was so effective in the AHL last season?
Holtz could be a star player because of his shooting ability. What he lacks in pure speed, Holtz makes up for with a premium shot. Holtz might be better off on a team that plays his style. It may also be a move that the devil will eventually regret.
However, it may be the move the Devils need to make. What would be the alternative? The Sharks won’t move Meyer for a piece. The trade must be built around an incredible young player. If the Devils try to land Holtz, the Sharks will ask for Dawson Mercer. It should be no.

It looks like the Devils are headed for a Holtz trade. The Athletic named it the devil’s room with the highest probability of movement. You can’t think about the possibilities of regret. Tom Fitzgerald just needs to move forward by doing well for the team.
