Omaha police investigate shooting at Target

Omaha police officers shot and killed a suspected active shooter on Tuesday. Around 12 p.m., officers responded to a Target near 178th Street and West Center Road and worked to clear the store, Omaha police said. Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmader said the shooter was shot and killed by officers. “There is evidence to suggest that the shell casing has penetrated the target and is being fired,” Schmaderer said. Schmader said no civilians were injured during the incident. Omaha police say a preliminary investigation shows the suspect fired multiple shots from an AR-15 style rifle. Law enforcement told KETV NewsWatch 7 the suspect is a white man in his early 30s. Omaha police said they would release the suspect’s name Tuesday night. A review of police scanner traffic indicates the suspected shooter died six minutes after the first call for help. There is no indication at this time how many shots were fired, who the gunman was or what connection he had to the store. Omaha police detectives and forensic technicians are wrapping up their investigation Tuesday night, he said. He also said that the parking lot is now open for people who have been asked to leave their vehicles. OUTSIDE THE STORE INVESTIGATION Target: Target will help return personal property to shoppers inside the store starting at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday. Shopping is allowed. Omaha police officers shot and killed a suspected active shooter on Tuesday.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmader said the shooter was shot and killed by officers.

“There is evidence with the shell casings that he entered the target and fired a shot,” Schmader said.

According to Schmader, no civilians were injured in the incident.

Omaha police say a preliminary investigation shows the suspect fired several rounds from a White-15 rifle.

Law enforcement told KETV NewsWatch 7 the suspect is a white man in his early 30s. Omaha police said they would release the suspect’s name Tuesday night.

A review of police scanner traffic indicates the suspected shooter died six minutes after the initial call for help.

There is no word at this time on how many shots were fired, the identity of the gunman, and what, if any, connection he had to the store.

Omaha police said detectives and forensic technicians were completing their investigation of the scene Tuesday night.

He said the parking lot was open for those who were asked to leave their vehicles for the purpose of the investigation.
